Complete Doll - A General KiSS Tutorial by Rini Click here to e-mail contributor. Click here to visit contributor's website.

This tutorial is subject to my TOU. Please read the shortened form at the bottom.

This is the way I used to do things, but I don't think it has changed that much. Hopefully it will be of some help to someone.
(Note: this is for Windows users.)

Here's a list of what you'll need:
  • MS Paint (default Windows program)
  • Notepad (which is a default Windows program, but any other text editor will work just as well.)
  • WCEL
  • PlayFKiSS
  • Paint Shop Pro (You can download a free trial.)
  • PowerArchiver (I think it's better than WinZip.)

Step 1:

The first thing is have your base doll. Whether it's a template, something you've drawn, or whatever, just have it open in Paint with the background a color you will not use. This will be the transparent color, #0 on the palette. Remember, not too large of a doll. I recommend looking at the window size in PFKiSS for reference.

Step 2:

You've got your doll, so now its time to make the outline. With it already shaded, copy and paste the base doll off to the side. Right click on the outline color with the dropper tool to make it the background color (don't worry, it won't change the actual bg color), and pick a color for the outline. Then, cut out your doll, and a box will appear. Color the box the color you want for the outline, and paste the doll back into the box not changing the bg color first. You've now got your outline.

Step 3:

Right. So now I usually make a palette, but you can wait until later if you make sure to only use 256 colors. Here is a pretty general palette. Make sure to include any colors you want, and don't forget the colors you used for your base doll. This has a little room for extra colors, but add them before 256-colorizing. Don't worry about the outline color or the background color. Now, paste your palette into PSP, and do Colors > Decrease Color Depth > 32K Colors. Then repeat with 256 Colors. Now, choose Colors > Save Palette and save it. You may want to save this as a separate image, but you don't have to. Close that, and open your doll. Choose Colors > Load Palette, and load the PSP palette you just made. Now its 256-colorized. This is much easier than doing it later, you just have to follow that palette.

Step 4:

Now, take your outline and start making your clothes, hair, whatever. Now you've got options. You can either begin your cnf, or make all the rest of your clothes. Doesn't matter, since this way I'm using WCEL. I'm gonna move on to the cnf stage, so if you're makin' clothes, have fun. Otherwise, follow me!

Step 5:

First, make a file for your cels and cnf. Now, all you do is copy and paste your doll, hair, clothes, etc. into WCEL one at a time, and save them in that folder. Easy 'nuff. Same with the palette, but save it as a palette, .kcf, instead of a cel. Time for the .cnf now. Also, I'd like to mention, you don't have to do all the cels at once, you can go back and make more stuff to add later! Take that, WSVC. *_*

Step 6:

Open PlayFkiss and choose Tools>Create New. If its greyed out, choose options>editing and set user level to editor. It'll come up with a black screen. Do File>Save As and save it.

Step 7:

Open that cnf in Notepad. If it says something like "a new kiss file, edit me!" go back and save it again. Edit it to look about like the picture above. The red underlined things are what you should add, the palette and the single cel that is the doll. Promise, you won't have to type this in again, unless you want to. If you choose to insert your cels this way, that's ok. Now, save it.

Step 8:

Open your cnf in PFkiSS again. Time to add everything. If you want, you can add it all from Notepad, or the way I'll show you. You should have your base doll in the window now, and the window itself should be the bg color. Your colors should be alright, if you followed instructions. Right click on your doll and choose either cel or object properties. Go to the documents tab, and make the window however big you want it. Without closing the properties window, position your doll and go to object properties. Now, see the fix value and original fix value? Fill 'em in with a fairly high number. I'll use 900. If you're using Notepad, ignore the stuff about putting in the cels from PFkiSS.

Step 9:

Go to Edit>Insert Cel. It'll bring up and open window, and just pick what you want to put in. Go back to properties, and under cel properties choose "pick". Find what you just put in, double click on it, push "play", and uncheck and check all the sets you want that item on. Now, if you're doing something with multiple parts to it, its easy enough to do this. Click on the object, go to object number, and make it the same number as the object you're adding it to. Position it with the offset X and Y, and then push the save button on the properties window. Then simply layer it with the forward and backward buttons. I recommend saving after you get an outfit put in. (File>Save As)

Step 10:

So, you wanna do snapto, eh? Simple 'nuff. Right click on the doll and choose "set snap-to parent". Now, position whatever it is how you want it, right click on it, and choose "add snap-to code". You can keep positioning/adding code without re-setting the parent on the base doll.

Step 11:

Now, you've got everything all positioned in your cnf, and all the effects and everything, right? (for effects I didn't mention, try the Big Kiss page's tutorials links. They're helpful, especially Zorro's tutorial.) Now's the time to make a readme, get it out of the way. So, open PowerArchiver. Press the new button, and find your folder. Type in whatever you're gonna call it (no more than 8 letters) and .LZH (in caps like that) after the name. It'll bring up the add window, so now just add in all your stuff. Open it again in PlayFKiSS, and make sure its all good, then you're done. (On a side note, if you end up with .bak files, just delete 'em. They're not used for anything, and should not be in your lzh. Alternatively, you can use DirectKiSS's build LZH feature, which saves a lot of time.
