Template Tutorial - A Base Drawing Tutorial by Holliness Click here to e-mail contributor. Click here to visit contributor's website.

Yay. Now you can learn about my secret ways of how I make templates since I seem to do so so well. o-o; FYI, this tutorial works best in Paint.

Step 1: Find a Picture
Gee golly that was hard. AHEM.. Try to find something that has a swim suit or short skirt or whatever. Usually short sleeves, shorts/skirt, and kinda tight cloths is just fine. Also, no hats is easier (which is why you don't see a lot of Digi Charat temps.)

Note from Snippets: Be sure that you have permission to trace whichever image you want to use. Tracing the art of others without permission is wrong and you could get into trouble for it.

Step 2: Outline
First please note this works best in Paint for Windows, but I'm sure it works with other things. ^_^ Okay... ONLY use bright colors. These are all the colors you can use for outlining. Otherwise it won't work. Anyways, try to separate different things. Like make all the skin one color, say purple, and then the hair all one color, say green. You can also outline the light/shadows if you're lazy or are bad at doing those, but make sure to do them in a different color also.

Step 3: Get Rid of Main Pic
Ahh I found out the hard way that there was an easier way to do this. DON'T ERASE EVERYTHING WITH A WHITE PAINTBRUSH. X_X Instead, download Irfanview (a picture viewing program.) When you have the step 2 pic loaded in Irfanview, do Shift+G. That brings you to a box thingie. Raise the gamma correction to 6.99. Repeat that about 5 times, then copy that outline back into Paint.

Step 4: Outside Colors
It's best to choose a main color to use for each thing first. Anyway you can do that, then make it quite noticably darker. Outline all the places it goes, but don't do the shading/light yet since you're changing that later.

Step 5: Light/Shadow Easier
Uhhm...use the color you used to outline the shadow/light and fill that shadow/light space in. ::whipes sweat:: Wow, that one was hard.

Step 6: Add the Main Color
See step 4 for reference. >.> Soo go back to that main color you chose and fill it in where the main color goes!! Whee, I rhymed.

Step 7: Light and Shadow
Finally! Now, with the main color, make it lighter. Fill in the light. Go back to the main color, and make it darker. Fill in the shade.

Step 8: Shading the Body
You can barely see the shading lines. Sorry. You can copy+paste that and zoom in to see. ANYWAYS it pretty much explains itself. Try to figure out where the light is coming from based on the hair's light/shading, and place your lines wisely.

Step 9: Finish
Fill in the shade color for the body. Yay. You're done :D.

EXTRA NOTES YOU STILL NEED TO READ EVEN THOUGH THERE'S NO PICTURE:
I did that in like 5 minutes so it looks like crap. When you're in step 2, try to make the outlining as neat as possible. Don't try to see how far you can make a line go without letting go. x_x That makes it look bad. Also, I forgot to shade the bells on her hair but oh well. :P Usually after step 9 I pick a color from the eyes or hair and make it lighter, fill that in for the background, make a little color palette of the colors in that doll, and slap their name somewhere. Uhhm that's just a fun extra I like :D You don't have to do that (obviously) but I like to so when people use my template they don't go, "Uhh, whose was this?" and have to search around their whole list of KiSS sites to find it >.<; Instead, they go, "Oh, it's by Holliness! :D ::credits holliness::" Hhhmmm YEAH that's about it!! OH if there's like 4 different colors in the hair, like in my Mizuho temp, then just use different colors again, and try not to get confused >.o which happens a lot with those kind. XD Anyways!! I've been talking too much! So byee and I hope this helps with your template making :D
